In Defense of the Manual Transmission

I know the automatics are faster now. The data doesn't lie — a modern dual-clutch will out-shift any human. But I still think the manual transmission is worth saving, and I'll happily make the case to anyone who'll listen.

For me it comes down to engagement. When you're rowing your own gears, you're actually driving — reading the road, thinking a corner ahead, matching revs on a downshift. The car stops being an appliance and starts being something you're doing together. Even a slow car feels alive when you're the one deciding what gear it's in.

There's a simple joy in a clean shift, too. Nailing a smooth heel-toe on a canyon road, or just clicking into third at exactly the right moment — small stuff, but it's satisfying every single time. I hope the manual sticks around, even if it becomes a purist's choice. Some things are worth keeping just because they make the everyday a little more fun.
